I've battled this problem too. As for the batteries,
you're right in thinking that the PB is running down
the batteries while sleeping. A software patch
(extension called something like sleep drain bug fix)
from VST, IIRC, is supposed to convince the PB 5xx to
use less juice while sleeping. Can't
