I have a similiar(spinning HDD when I don't want it to) problem when doing the same thing with all of the powerbooks I have owned (three 5300's, a 3400 and currently a Kanga). The workaround I have found for the spinning hard drive is to use the control strip to spin down the hard drive,

Everything appears to working with the CF card as the boot drive EXCEPT for the fact that whenever I open folders with the triangle opener, launch applications or click on links in my web browser the hard drive spins-up! I suspect this is NOT supposed to be happening as it defeats the
