I use a Ositech Trumpcard, the Jack of Diamonds in fact. It is a combo
modem/10-base-T Card. Works great! (This is in a 1400, but I can't imagine
there would be much difference).
As for the Cardbus issue, your 5300 has no hope, but your 3400 might... Have
a look:

I've got a Global Village Powerport combination ethernet and modem card
(NOS, eBay, $12), that works perfectly with my 5300.
3com 589d, is the only one I know works with that driver, well any of
the 589's
