Thanks to everybody who responded on and off list. Despite a fair amount of trying
various things, I haven't been able to get the iBook working, so my friends are going
to be taking it to a shop for diagnosis ($40) and, probably, repairs.

This is a strange one. The keyboard light between the function keys is
the number lock.
Open the cd rom drive by pushing the tip of a pen into the tiny button
(little circular hole) right next to the regular open button (long
rounded rectangular button). Take the disk out. Try resetting the
