problem five: I'm currently running an old install of OS 8.6 on this machine. IT's started to get glitchy on me. Files will no longer open when I double click on them, though they will open if they are in my apple menu (I've dragged an alias of my hard drive there, but it's still annoying.) Aliases are unaffected. problem six: TCP/IP issues. I'm currently using AOL 5.0 as my ISP, as my folks pay for it, I'm poor, and none of the free services offer a Mac version, AFAIK. I can dial into AOL with no problems, and I'm able to use any aol services (email, instant messages, chat, et. al.) However, any time I attempt to connect to the web, either with AOL's internal browswer, or with Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 4, I get an error: "unable to connect to <http://www.XXXXXX.com>". I'm thinking it's a problem with TCP/IP, but everything is ok. (Incidentally, I use a US Robotics XJ5560 56.6k modem, NOT the internal 33.6k modem.) This system worked fine with AOL and IE5 up until 2 months ago, shortly before I damaged the power connector. I haven't installed anything new lately. I have installed all the patches available from Apple, but to no avail. I believe what I really need to do is a clean system reinstall, but unfortunately, when I was given the computer, it didn't come with the special system 7.6 CD that the 3400 requires. I have access (through a friend) to the apple developer library of disk images, so I can easily upgrade the 3400 back up to OS 8.6 when I'm ready, but first I need the 3400's specific version of 7.6. Does anyone know where I can download a disk image, or would someone perhaps be willing to the burn me a copy? And for that matter, is it worth uprgrading from 8.1 to 8.6? What are the big differences? Do you lose a lot of resources? Thanks so much, I know the knowledgable people here will be able to help.
