If you get desperate and want to try clearing the font caches, delete
the following:
In /System/Library/Caches/:
fontTablesAnnex
com.apple.ATS.System.fcache
com.apple.ATSServer.FODB_System
In /Library/Caches/:
com.apple.ATS
In /User/Library/Preferences/ folder:
com.apple.ATS.plist
If that do

once in a while I was having the problem with PowerMail that all of a
sudden clicking through emails in the Recent Mails window (and probably
in any other mail browser window) became very slow - PowerMail
needed up to 10 seconds to display the text of the email I just selected.
