Eberline made the RM-14 and E-140 with only 3 scales to 50K CPM to avoid this problem. Friskers do not get a lot of use on the higher ranges. At SONGS, we ordered the 177 count rate with only 3 scales for the same reason. You could retrofit to a 3 position switch, and scrape off the 1K indicator. We also purchased about 40 Ludlum 2-1 friskers, with 3 scales and battery only like the E-140. The speaker is inside, and they are very easy to calibrate and maintain (and they also bounce good and keep working).

Duke Energy recently learned that the Ludlum model 44-9 probe has a manufacturer stated dead time of 80 microseconds. This would yield a theoretical count rate loss of 67% at 500,000 cpm (the top of the X1K scale). Actual dead time measurements made by Duke Energy yielded slightly better results of 56% count rate loss at 500,000 cpm. Duke Energy would like to know the following: 1) Does your site or utility use the Ludlum model 177 count rate with the model 44-9 probe? 2) Do you have any kind of restriction on the X1K scale due to probe dead time? If so, what? 3) Do you perform any kind of dead time correction for the X1K scale during calibration? If so, what? 4) Do you perform any kind of dead time correction for the X1K scale for field measurements? If so, what?
