Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Watch Indonesia!, Deutsche Kommission Justitia et Pax International Conference „ How to deal with a Burdened Past? - Asian Experiences “ 20th April 2006, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Berlin In the recent past, many Asian countries experienced violent internal and external conflicts which have had deep impacts on the societies concerned. It is therefore necessary that every country deals with the past injustices and violent acts. It could be regarded as essential that a „healing process“ will be initiated. Nevertheless, such demands constitute one of the greatest challenges to the creation of sustainable and peaceful societies. Approaches to these ‘shadows’ of the past vary according to specific circumstances. Coming to terms with the past could be achieved by teaching and discussing the states’ history or past injustices in schools or memorials. Additionally, states have the opportunity to establish institutions, such as tribunals or truth and reconciliation commissions. The international conference on April 20th will start with an opening speech to give a general overview about the topic. How can the terms „dealing with the past” or „coming to terms with the past“ be defined? Why is it necessary to come to terms with the past and which condi-tions have to be present? When a society tries to deal with the past, which impact could it have on the post-conflict situation and democratization process. After the opening speech, participants from four Asian countries will discuss what kind of processes were or will be initiated to come to terms with the burdened past. Which positive or negative impacts did those approaches have? Furthermore, has the international community capacities to support such initiatives? If yes, what kind of actions should the international community take to ensure a peaceful and democratic society? We would like to invite you to participate with Asian and German experts in the conference. Please send back the registration form until April 13, 2006.
