The Jakarta Police Traffic Management Center said that demonstrators numbered around 800 people. They were from both pro- and anti-government groups. In order to avoid clashes, the two groups were divided by police barricades. The pro-government protesters left at 1:50 p.m. They were replaced by around 300 people from the National Students Alliance, who broke through the barbed wire barricades and hung up banners. Jalan Gatot Subroto was blocked by the rallying crowd. Vehicles were rerouted from Taman Ria to Jalan Gerbang Pemuda and through Jalan Lapangan Tembak and Pal Merah. Drivers are advised to avoid the Semanggi area and take alternative routes. Rallies also took place in Makassar, South Sulawesi, and Surabaya, East Java. In Makassar, students held a demonstration in front of the Democratic Party branch office and threw rotten eggs. In Surabaya, students rallied in front of the local government office. They said they were embarrassed with the attitude of lawmakers who fought among themselves during the plenary session. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
