Freedom Institute memperoleh penghargaan dari sebuah yayasan Amerika yang bergerak dalam promosi kapitalisme pasar-bebas. (lihat berita The Jakarta Post di bawah).
The five-year-old Freedom Institute holds regular public discussions, conducts research and boasts an extensive library of around 8,000 national and international publications as well as an online information center. The institute and the eight other winners will receive the grants at a ceremony at the Liberty Forum on April 20-21 in Colorado Springs. Atlas, a Virgina-based foundation, aims to encourage and promote free market economic theory worldwide, and its grants honor organizations that advocate economic freedom, individual liberties, and limited government under the rule of law. The Freedom Institute also gives out annual awards to people for accomplishments in the social sciences, literature and medicine, grants university scholarships and holds competitions for university students, particularly in Islamic studies. It also publishes books, holds media training sessions and broadcasts radio talk shows. Institute executive director and a ministerial advisor to Bakrie, Rizal Mallarangeng, said international recognition would encourage the center to improve its performance. "It's a start for us to expand and become more professional. We sincerely hope there will be other Indonesian think tanks receiving such recognition in the future." he said. The Atlas foundation was founded in 1981 by the late Sir Anthony Fisher while he was an economic advisor to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. The first Templeton Freedom Awards were held in 2004 and are funded by philanthropist Sir John Templeton. With a network of 250 think tanks in 74 countries, Atlas honored 26 institutes this year. Other winners of grants were the Albanian Liberal Institute, the Center for Independent Studies (Australia), the Frontier Center for Public Policy (Canada), the Hellenic Leadership Institute (Greece), IMANI Center for Humane Education (Ghana), Institute for Market Economics (Bulgaria), the Instituto Liberdade do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and the Ludwig von Mises Institute (Romania). *************************************************************************** Berdikusi dg Santun & Elegan, dg Semangat Persahabatan.
