TEHRAN - The Iranian ambassador to Kuwait has sought to hold an immediate meeting with Kuwait's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, the Kuwait-based Al-Anbaa daily reported on Monday. According to the paper, Ali Jannati's call for a meeting with the Kuwaiti official is a response to the recent alleged spy claims that several people were arrested in Kuwait in connection with spying for Iran. The Iranian Embassy said in a statement Sunday the spy report was baseless and aimed at harming ties between the two countries, and ""diverting the attention from the real threat to the area,"" which is Israel. On May 1, Kuwait's Al-Qabas daily said that security agencies in Kuwait have busted a spy cell working for Iran. Citing high-ranking security sources, the daily added Kuwait has arrested at least seven men in this regard Al-Qabas said the cell had spied on Kuwaiti and U.S. military installations for Iran's Islamic Republic Guards Corps. In an attempt to resolve friction in relation between Tehran and Kuwait, Jannati plans to repudiate the spy claims and insist on strong ties between the two countries, Al-Anbaa daily wrote. Meanwhile, the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya satellite television reported earlier on Monday that Kuwait's government has confirmed the arrest of several people over charges of spying for Iran [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
