*Japanese authorities search military bases over classified Aegis data leak*

*TOKYO (AP)* -- Authorities searched two Japanese military bases following
the leak of sensitive U.S. warship technology data, an official said
Tuesday.

The leak of classified information involved U.S.-developed technology for
high-tech Aegis radar used on several Japanese destroyers, and on U.S.
warships carrying missile interceptors.

Naval and civilian police conducted searches Tuesday morning, said Japanese
navy spokesman Kozo Okuda. He refused to provide further details, including
the locations searched.

"We take the leak very seriously, as it affects the national interests of
both Japan and the United States," the Chief of Staff of Japan's maritime
forces, Eiji Yoshikawa, told reporters Tuesday.

Authorities searched two Japanese bases in western Japan where personnel
trained at a naval academy - thought to be at the center of the leak - are
stationed, Kyodo News agency said, citing unidentified investigative
officials.

The case first surfaced in March when police found a computer disc at the
home of a Japanese naval officer in Kanagawa prefecture (state) near Tokyo
during a separate investigation.

Authorities searched the naval academy last month and have questioned about
300 people over the case, Kyodo said. The data are believed to have been
used in teaching materials at the academy, it said.

The alleged violation of a 1954 law concerning protection of secrets under a
bilateral security pact is reportedly the first at a Japanese naval academy.
