I used *GhostScript *years ago, it worked but the screen fonts were
rubbish (you could use Windows fonts for printing, but I was using it
for ad-hoc on-screen queries)

If you can work out the structure of a PDF I'm sure you can do it. I prefer to
print to a PDF printer or use something like PDFtk to fill in PDF forms.
