Gunmen kill religious leader

Baghdad: Unknown gunmen shot dead the local head of a Sunni religious
group in Iraq's Shiite city of Basra on Friday, state television reported.
Yusif Al Hassan was killed near the mosque where he led prayers in Basra,
south of Baghdad, colleagues said.
Hassan was a senior member of the Muslim Scholars Association, a group
from the Sunni minority community that is critical of the US-backed political
process.

Suicide bomber kills ten

Baghdad: A suicide bomber killed at least 10 people and injured 20
inside a Shiite mosque in Baghdad, defying a crackdown against Al Qaida
launched by security forces two days ago.
The blast at the Buratha mosque in northern Baghdad took place as
worshippers were gathering for Friday noon prayers.
Police Lieutenant Thaer Mahmoud said the attacker was wearing an
explosive belt.
Jalal Eddin Al Sagheer, preacher at the mosque and one of Iraq's
leading politicians, claimed the explosives were in the bomber's shoes.
He said guards arrested a suspect attacker after discovering
explosives as they searched shoes left outside the building.
Iraqi authorities launched the massive security operation in the
capital on Wednesday, employing 75,000 troops, extending a nighttime curfew and
implementing a weapons ban.
The attack came during a four-hour driving ban which was introduced
to prevent violence during traditional Islamic prayers held every Friday.
The same mosque was attacked on April 7, when three suicide bombers
dress as women killed at least 71 people.
