Indonesia to host women playwrights international conference Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will host the 7th Women Playwrights International Conference (WPIC) in Jakarta on November 19-24 and in Bali on November 25-26, a spokesperson said on Wednesday. It was very important for Indonesia to host the conference because the voice of theater workers in developing nations had drawn less attention, said theater worker Ratna Sarumpaet who has struggled for Indonesia`s attempt to host the conference. "There are differences between the voices and issues of women in established nations and those of women in the developing countries. The ideas that emerged in the WPI conferences held in relatively established nations failed to pay maximum attention to the problems facing the real world," she said. Since it was established in Buffalo, New York, in 1982, the organization has held conferences once in every three years in Toronto, Canada, in 1991; Adelaide, Australia, in 1994; Galway, Ireland in 1997; Athens, Greece in 2000, and in Manila, the Philippines, in 2003. Noted writer Nawal El Saadawi of Egypt is slated to become a keynote speaker in the opening of the conference. State Minister of Women Empowerment Meutia Hatta Swasono and Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso will open the conference which will be attended by women from 20 different countries and female artists from 20 cities in Indonesia.
