Indonesian President Issues Decree to Stop Evangelism in Aceh

Banda Aceh, Waspada – Indonesian president has releases a decree (Kepres) 
that forbid evangelism in Aceh and asked any NGO and organization to stop 
their evangelism activities in Aceh. Dozens NGOs has also invited to a 
meeting with Majelis Permusyawatan Ulama (MPU, Islamic Council of Aceh), 
including World Vision.

‘’The evangelism has been national issues. The problem have been discussed 
in national level and the president has issue a decree to forbid evangelism 
in Aceh,’’ Head of MPU Muslim Ibrahin told Waspada daily on Wednesday.

Muslim said the government will cease NGOs operation in Aceh if they 
involved in evangelism in Aceh and their workers visa will be ended and they 
have to leave Aceh.

Following the decree, MPU has asked police and local government to run 
investigation and find evidence on any reports on evangelism submitted by 
people in Aceh. ‘’The police have to become more pro-active in managing this 
issues,’’ said Muslim.

MPU has also invited NGOs that has been reported as organizing evangelism in 
Aceh, in the name of humanitarian help. Among them is World Vision. In the 
meeting, they promised not to run evangelism activities and will help report 
any evangelism cases.

Source in Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR) 
told Waspada that BRR has also held a meeting with NGOs to discuss the 
evangelism issues. BRR told the NGOs that BRR will expel any NGOs that have 
been reported and proofed in running evangelism in Aceh.

Last week, hundreds student from Syiah Kuala University marched and staged 
protest in front of Aceh Governor office in Banda Aceh. They asked the 
government to expel NGOs that provide humanitarian help to covered 
evangelism activities.

Irwansyah, president of Syiah Kuala University student association, told 
Waspada that they have proofs on several NGOs that run evangelism in Aceh. 
Among them are Yayasan Kreasi Sosial, CWS (Church World Service), and IOM 
(International Organization for Migration, and dozen other NGOS. ©
