Suicide bombers kill 13 Iraq pilgrims

HILLA, Iraq - Two women suicide bombers attacked Shiite pilgrims heading for a
festival in the holy city of Karbala south of Baghdad on Thursday, police said,
killing at least 13 people and wounding 25.
Police Lieutenant Kazem al-Khafaji in Babil province said two women wearing
explosives-packed belts blew themselves up 50 yards apart and at a five-minute
interval in Iskandiriyah 60 kilometres (37 miles) south of the capital.
The double suicide attack targeted pilgrims walking to Karbala 110 kilometres
south of Baghdad for a Shiite festival planned there on Sunday.
Earlier a rash of bomb attacks, two targeting pilgrims headed to Karbala,
killed five people and wounded 18, security officials said.
In one attack a Shiite pilgrim was killed and seven others wounded by a
roadside bomb in Baghdad's commercial district of Karrada.
Another explosion killed a policeman and injured five of his colleagues near a
checkpoint in the Zafraniya district of southern Baghdad set up to search
pilgrims heading south.
