When Fidel went to the UN for the first time 50 years ago

AFTER intolerable acts of discourtesy, insolence and rudeness toward the Cuban
delegation, Fidel and those accompanying him went to the Theresa Hotel in
Harlem to cries of "Long live Castro!" and "Fidel, Fidel, Fidel!" from
thousands of New York's poorest inhabitants.

Cuba was excluded from a lunch President Eisenhower offered the Latin American
delegations. Fidel responded: "That's all right by me and I would like those
attending to have a good appetite. I shall lunch in the Harlem district, with
the poor. I belong to the poor people."

The Cuban prime minister lunched with the employees and owner of the Theresa
Hotel.

This photo is of that moment, and Fidel is accompanied by Comandante Juan
Almeida.
