Twelve of the suspects hailed from Minnesota, one from Alabama and another from California, federal authorities said. Two women, who are naturalized American citizens, were arrested in Minnesota on charges of raising funds for the al-Shabab, a fearsome militant group aligned with Al Qaeda. The other twelve have fled the country and are believed to be fighting with the group in Somalia, authorities said. "These arrests and charges should serve as an unmistakable warning to others considering joining terrorist groups like al-Shabab," said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. "If you chose this route you can expect to find yourself in a U.S. jail cell of a casualty on the battlefield in Somalia." He said that the investigation is ongoing. Seven of the men believed to be in Africa had been charged in previous indictments but were added to a superseding indictment unsealed Thursday. The two who are in custody, Amina Farah Ali, 33 and Hawo Mohamed Hassan, 63, both of Rochester, Minn., were charged with raising funds for al-Shabab over the past two years. In some cases, they allegedly went door-to-door in Somali communities in Minnesota raising cash for a phony charity. In others, they are charged with holding teleconference fundraisers. Authorities say they have evidence the women sent cash to militants in Somalia on 12 separate occasions. Al-Shabab is trying to impose a strict Islamic state in the lawless East African country and recently claimed responsibility for killing 76 people watching World Cup soccer in a bombing in Uganda. The arrests stem from an ongoing investigation into terrorist recruitment amongst young Somali immigrants in Minneapolis. The other 12 are charged with providing material support to the terror group by flying to Somalia to wage jihad and for helping recruit other Americans, some of whom have been killed in combat. The men are believed to have gone to Somalia between 2007 and 2009, authorities said. In another case unrelated to Thursday's developments, a 26-year-old Chicago man was charged with plotting to go to Somalia to become a suicide bomber.
