I agree with you. I am a user of CAD software that requires maintenance
programs that I haven't bothered with, (despite their regular attempts) as I
don't feel that the price warrants the benefit. However I still use the
version that I have because it still performs the functions that I need.

All,
I'd like to point out that (in my opinion ) Protel's 'tech' support is not
worth it.

Just a small point Bill, to pick up on something you mentioned. America
isn't the only country to use Protel, or any of the other CADs tools you
mention. In fact quite a few other countries even design electronics! So in
fact the effects of CAD prices, like Protel, effect everyone all over the

A coworker contacted Altium about a month ago for budgeting purposes to find
out the maintaince cost for PCAD 2000 (full version) and the expected
upgrade cost of Protel 99SE.
The sales person respond with US$1995 for both.
Maybe somebody wants to call Altium to verify?

Almost, or partially lost. After placing the component, just hit enter, place, then
enter. Don't worry, the designator will still automatically increase it's number.

This is a feature I haven't been able to use since I got 99SE. I have
been looking and looking and still can't find how to get that back. If
you find a way let me know.
Thanks,
Brad

Don, I also agree to you.
Changing to another product will not solve the problem.
We invested a lot of time in "debugging" Protel 3.X. 98, 99 and 99SE.
Protel every time was encouraged to solve the problem in the new product
releases.
So we must "educate" the new company holders to follow the old

I don't know what I've done, but before I used to be able to select a
component, from a PCB library, and place as many as I liked (unless I
was dreaming!!!), but now I can only place one component at a time,
having to click the "place" command every time.
What have I changed ?
