This was discussed on the list around 1/25/02. There was a note from
someone indicating that Camtastic has a bug related to path length; here's
the text:

It seems that not only spaces in footprints can cause trouble but in filenames

Well, I think there is a way, but I have to go out of town for four days. I
have some schematics to translate to see if it works, but the path is
basically to write the Tan

You can create these in a few minutes. You can pull the existing icons
into
paint and change the numbers, and put the new icons back with the rest of
them. Then, you use the big down arrow on
Is there an easy way to toggle between "Avoid obstacle" and "Push Obstacle"?

Hi everyone,
We have only installed Protel 99SE SP6 this year on our network, and I have
just starting introducing the pcb editor to the students.
I am not a network IT person but will attempt to describe the problem(s).
Most of the students had a problem showing itself when we browsed pcb

Hmm... the "old school of thought" was that documentation and references
should be clear and unambiguous. No, we don't have enough of the old

Kiernan,
Ian's explanation below is correct. What you're seeing are drawn
pads rather then flashed rectangular pads. A major shortcoming of Protel if
you are doing very fine or finicky work. As for your soldermask
encroachment, that will not be an issue because the soldermask pad will be

Bryn,
I cannot recall exactly what the problem is but Protel does have
some issue with lower case letters in library parts. Again this is something
that forced me to change a bunch of library part/footprint names shortly
after starting to use Protel. It fails at some less then everyday fun
Hi Joe
I don't know if this is an option for you, but we use an old copy of Protel
ver 2.8 to convert old Dos generated gerbers into Protel databases .
It does a much better job of importing gerber than any of the new and
improved versions.

What you are getting is drawn pads. Protel doesn't export flash pads in
anything other 90 degree rotation it draws them with a round trace instead
(which is why you are seeing the rounded corners)
Some gerber programmes will allow a custom aperture to give a flash pad at a

I have a WORD macro to convert it is a but cumbersome but it does work.
It will take a while to find it but if you wish you can have it.

Kiernan,
You may have produced the components pads with a "fill" area rather then
a pad definition. A fill area would be painted by available round
apertures (gerber legacy) resulting in radii at the corners. A pad is
defined in the gerber data as a particular shape and is "flashed" at
it's origin
Like Mike I've had better results with DXF file imports.
If you would like to talk to someone who knows Camtastic,
send a e-mail to Danny Carr ([EMAIL PROTECTED] or

Camtastic and is very knowledgable about it.

I've just managed to get a PCB created under Protel and I'm struggling to get
the gerber output to match what's on the Protel screen. I've got several
components (that I've created myself) which use very small rectangular pads and
I've used these components at several angles all over the PCB. W
Joe,
I havent tried the gerber import in Protel (from Camtasic) however, if you
can not import the Camtastic gerbers, export them to dxf in Camtk, then
import them as dxf in Protel. We have dont this often with good results

Abd ul-Rahman,
I think we're getting a little too much of the old school of thought
here. Not allowing lowercase is just too primative. If you're going to
take away the spaces, give me my lowercase. To avoid the
filename-in-quotations-because-of-spaces problem I rarely use spaces and
instead
I lost this program when my OS crashed. Does anybody know where I can find
