Nope. Thanks for the reply. Yes, it would be nice if there was such a beast, but I
have a feeling that there isn't.
The reason I was interested is probably pretty obvious, but if not, it's simp
Brad,
Just saw this post after I responded to your previous.
Well, here might be a simple explanation. Say you have a customer using
Orcad (pretty widely used Schematic tool) and the footprint field was not
what your library
had for names. Problem is that Protel takes

There was a time shortly after beginning to work with 99 SE (July 01) when I

Brad,
reading your answer to Bob it seemed to me we had close views on several points.

Thanks for your understanding (many before have not really seen where I was

Yup, you are right I realize they are not really
bugs, just the way Protel works. I kinda thought we were discussing a wish
list for options tho
Hi Igor et al.,
My 2c worth:
I use a library component for every part so I rarely have more than one
footprint stored in the library, only for the cases as you suggest:
TO-220 horizontal or vertical, wave or reflow for a SMT chip part etc.
If there is only one footprint in the library and it is c

I guess that you have seen Bob's detailed explanation of his issue.
Not what I expected nor what it seems you would have expected either.
As for your comments below I can understand your view, it doesn't

It is a very interesting site, but I have found by digging around there in
the past for other stuff that they usually do not go too "deep" into a site,
and certainly not into any "query" type pages such as the knowledge base.

Bob,
I am beginning to understand your issues. But most of them are not
bugs. See my comments interspersed below. Somewhere in my comments I might
stumble on a little gotcha because I haven't tried to mimic this whole
process exactly as you describe. Maybe a small detail or two might do

Brad, Mike
my understanding of the question is that there are more than four footprints that
could be used for a component. Let's say a capacitor. There are four footprint fields
in the sch component library and there couldb be 53 different footprints one uses for
capacitors. There is obviously
Mike,
I am not sure that your explanation is the same as the problem I
thought was being described. I couldn't follow your example completely
because you didn't state which footprint was the active/current footprint
after you did the update. Sounds like you thought it was a bug just listing
Brad,
Well, it may come down to how Protel
actually defines "Update Footprint"
IMHO that verbage should mean update
the footprint to what is currently in the library
for that footprint. I guess Protel's definition of
this is change the footprint on the pcb to what
the schematic symbol calls out for

first of all there are no standard answers to most of your questions
it varies greatly. Here are my answers to those issues. First I assume that
you are using P99SE SP6.

You crack me up with #6! :)
Actually I think Nick Martin told us how to add that text a little while
ago. I think you could name it in 99SE.
It's now been factory set which is great.

I think Ian said it was there too.

Brad,
Start out with a shematic you already finished. lets say the schematic, had
an SN74LS04 with one footprint assigned to in a LS schematic lib. The
footprint for this part was named SOIC14. Now change SOIC14 to something
like SOIC-14, update the schematic from the lib. ( or globally cha
hi there protel users,
this question has two parts - one specific to protel and one not. first
the general PCB design question - what kind of clearance should there
usually be between traces and a polygon plane that surrounds them? is
manufacturability the only issue (so use the same clearanc
Bob,
I have seen some messages previously about this footprint updating
issue, but I have never experienced it myself. How does it manifest itself?
I commonly overwrite default footprints in the footprint field but have
never had footprints change back to the default one on the list upon

cut it out, you're starting to get me excited about DXP. Quit

Tony,
what about vice-versa to your comment below? PCB copper features in
schematic that you don't want in the BOM.
Previously one could leave the part type field blank to drop something from
the BOM but this was not always the best or cleanest solution.

Ian,
Very happy to see they are REALLY looking
hard at the Library Update capabilities.
That was a very very big sore spot for me,
with 99SE. I was really hoping they would
do much more with it. How they ultimately
handle that will be a major part of decision
to go DXP or something else. I wish the
Has anybody written a server or something that highlights all pads and
tracks (P99SE PCB) that have the same net when I simply drag my cursor over
them. I'm just looking to speed things up by getting not having to hit ESN
then click on the net then hit XA to deselect them all.

does anyone know how to overcome the following effect:
