Here's how to install protel under wine. Note that this will not get you to
a working installation, but it will at least set it up to a stage where you
can run the debugger...
1. Install wine (obviously). I installed the latest release (20040309). Make
sure it's set up correctly; I used winesetupt

Unfortunately I didn't get to try this out, since I fixed the ratsnest by

Hi all:
Using P99SE PCB, I deleted some tracks, and I got left over some zero-length
tracks that I can't delete. I can't select the zero-length tracks either, at
least by drawing a box around them nor by select-all-net. Any ideas how to
delete these rogue tracks that disturb my rats-nest?
Cheers,
Yes, it is worth your while, at least in 99SE. It's quite straightforward,
if what you mean is you want to print individual layers of a PCB you've
drawn.
Open the PCB you've drawn in Prtoel, then press F-P (file-print). This will
generate a default printout. Click on the tab at the top of the file

Others have already answered this question, but if there's any doubt at all
in your own mind, you have a couple of options available to you.
1. Get company #2 to pay for a valid protel licence.

What we do here is to make a DIP-like prototype board for our FPGA's,

with all the I/O's to pins on board. We can either use this for prototyping

An easier method for doing this hand-soldering is to use what is known as a
mini-wave tip. It's a concave cupped tip that you fill with solder, and use
exactly as you describe - drag it along the pads. If the pads have been
designed right, it's really easy to do. Even without any special allowances
I do now, but I don't think I did when I first ran it. I've pretty much
solved the problem (except for the duplicate net errors I have to delete
each time) by removing all nets from the pcb, then re-synchronising (of
course, adding connected copper to nets).

Another data point:
When I just create a netlist, there are duplicate nets with the same name

name, and append the new nodes to the existing net. Is there an easy way of

Hi all:
I usually use a hierarchical structure for my schematic documents, with a
main document with all the connectors on it, then below that a block
diagram, and then the actual circuitry on one or more levels below that.
I'm currently doing a reasonable-sized board, with lots of digital lines
I know it's poor form to reply to my own message, but it seems that it's
positioned below Protel in the market place ($3k a seat vs $7k a seat). I've
signed up for a trial CD, we'll see how it runs...

I got an email from Altium today espousing the virtues of their latest
product, being "nvisage". It seems to offer nothing that DXP doesn't offer,

Where is this product positioned (I see no real mention of a price point);

Hi all:
I have been asked to import all my schematic docs into word, which I know
sounds like a fun job, but in fact isn't. To make my life easier, I have

(and/or adapt for use with pcb's, which I will be doing later...):
If you don't use it, uninstall the server by clicking the down-arrow thingy

Hi Robert:
Turn off the online DRC, or at least be more selective about what you enable
the on-line DRC for - this should improve your performance. Also, the
autosave takes a little while every 15 inutes or so - you can increase the
time interval for that.
I run it on a PIII-500, and the perform

I've never had a problem making pdf's from my schematics. I use a postscript
printer, setup to print to file, then use ghostscript to convert the
postscript to a pdf. The output quality depends on which PS printer you
choose; generally Apple ones are pretty good.

I agree Dennis. A further part of our problem is that we have about 15
computers with Protel installed, all over our site, using floating licenses.
The graphic is in a shared directory, which everyone has mapped to the same

A solution to this problem would
I have added a bitmap image to the schematic template I normally use.

Just one more note on spaces in filenames. If you have a whole bunch of
files/directories with spaces in their names, and you want to get rid of the
spaces, here's a small(!) command you can run at the cygwin bash prompt:
Run this one first, which renames all directories under the current

At the moment it's a once-off thing, but it's something that I'm planning to

That's not a bug, it's a "feature". One of the debatable behaviours of
editors is that if you are in "overwrite" mode, that the overwrite mode
should extend to between lines - this is the behaviour that Protel is
exhibiting in this instance. It's debatable whether or not this is
"correct"; by the

Hi Steve:
One way to acheive this is to place two schematic parts one over the other.
That way all the connectivity will be the same for both, and there will be
two pcb parts registered in the database. It will look ugly, though, because
all the pins will have junctions at the ends.
Cheers,
Matt
I'm the exact opposite of this. I try to make each schematic part look like
its function, rather than its physical layout. That way, the schematic will
be a proper abstraction of the circuit, rather than a rough draft of the
PCB. IMO it makes the schematic easier to read and understand if it's
