I found it - it was not a prototype issue:
my html was
bunch of table stuff
input field, not contained in tr's
and Firefox 5 was rewriting it to
bunch of table stuff
input field
when I rewrote it to:
bunch of table stuff
input field, not contained in tr's
it works just fine.

Would this apply to "hover" as well? (i've let to own a smart phone.) i.e.
stay away from hover?
