Thanks for all suggestions! I finally went for Nan Liu's solution by
checking the $PATH environment variable for an executable.
The resulting commit is here:

According to IEEE Std 1003.1, 2004 Edition, "type" does not take
any options. Anyway, on Solaris-5.8:
