I'm replying to my own comment since I resolved the issue. I edited the Makefile in the siplib subdirectory and added '-lCrun' to the LIBS tag. I then deleted the currently compiled libsip.so, recompiled, installed and am able to import qt successfully. Thanks to Albert Chin for making me see what

I did use the Sun Forte Compiler. Oddly enough, libsip doesn't appear to be linked to the libCrun library. % ldd libsip.so libqt-mt.so.3 => /usr/local/qt/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 libXext.so.0 => /usr/lib/libXext.so.0 libX11.so.4 => /usr/lib/libX11.so.4 libresolv
