What about including http://www.pointcloud.org/ in sextante?
Apparently its development is going faster than liblas, which
unfortunately is mostly proprietary.

Hi Chris, thanks for enlarging the discussion here, that's always better. I
really like the idea to interpret CSVT, but users will need a gui to create
it. That remains a good patch for 2.0 if possible.
We could also add cvst / vrt writing in a standalone function (vector menu)
.. not urgent to me
That looks pretty cool. Let me have a look at it and see how it can be
integrated. Not maybe for an urgent priority, but I would like to
rework the LiDAR part of SEXTANTE, and this looks promising

I come back to this subject after helping to solve the performance problem
with Mathias.
So, I am first runnning my tests on my ubuntu laptop. Since it is my
computer, it is not ubuntu server but the classical Ubuntu with an X server
running.
I tried in my terminal
echo $DISPLAY
I report my progress here
I managed to get a PDF via the GetPrint request by following these steps
1/ Create a fake X server
Xvfb :99 -ac -noreset &
2/ Add the option in the fastcgi , for example
FastCgiConfig -idle-timeout 70 -maxClassProcesses 50 -minProcesses 3
-init-start-delay 3 -restart-

Every time I load the composer (Ubuntu 12.10) it takes about 4 minutes to
load (even starting from a blank project). Is this the general pattern, or
is it perhaps something strange with my system?

It takes less than a second with QGIS master (from last night) on my
Windows machine - regardless if it is an empty composer or an existing
one. This is on Windows from the OSGeo4W installer.

You're mistaking liblas with laslib
laslib/lastools :
- https://cs.unc.edu/~isenburg/lastools/
- only dev is Martin Isenburg
- the part for conversion, export, etc. are under LGPD, the rest is
proprietary

I haven't completely verified this but I'm convinced that when you define
additional symbols' folders that the composer takes more time to startup. Do
you have this kind of folders added to the Settings?
