Just FYI, a couple of months ago I had the same issue with password secured
GeoJSON files over https and under proxy.
The access to the GeoJSON files worked without any problem without the
proxy.
Under the proxy I had to set the environment variable as said in a previous
email.

@Phil: I'm VERY curious if this helps... because IF it does (and it
could because: if it is actually GDAL which is pulling the json over the
net, it needs proxy info too, and it is not picked up by the Qt-network
machinery probably))
BUT IF this works, it woul be nice
