ok - I finally got SAGA 2.3.1 working after patching the io_gdal command
in file SagaAlgorithm214.py to use the "RESAMPLING" parameter instead of
the "INTERPOL" one - just as described by gcarillo in
http://hub.qgis.org/issues/14735

I just installed SAGA version 2.3.1 and there are lots of io_gdal issues
- basically with all raster operations (in combination with QGIS master
2 (2.18)).
Seems like there are closed bugs on this very same issue (closed as
being irrelevant) - f.e. https://hub.qgis.org/issues/13279 - opp
