There were some changes in that area of the code in the last 2 weeks, so
if it works with current master I guess it's ok to assume it's fixed
until somebody complains.

Hi Sandro,
There are three possibilities:
* Open a recent (or not-so-recent) project
* Click the "new project" button
* Add a layer to the canvas
The welcome screen should only be shown when the mapcanvas is empty anyway.
