is the new qgis browser supposed to already preview correctly wms and
GRASS layers or it is still an ongoing work?
I can preview only shapes/tiffs/etc.
WMS layers show the metadata but no layer preview. GRASS
locations/mapsets are seen as normal files.

I'm testing the new browser; a great improvement. A few issues (I'm not sure if
I'm
missing something here):
- drag and drop works on the legend, not on the canvas
- it does not work for WMS layers
- WFS are not listed
Furthermore, when dragging a tiff on the legend, QGIS freezes with:

I can confirm crash under Linux too (tested with c3e161a). And
confirm that Windows nightly builds from OSGeo4W not
affected (tested with ef981f1).

For me the preview also is not rendered first time, I have to switch
from preview

If I'm not wrong the standalone browser also used to show correctly the
layers in GRASS mapsets, the integrated one doesn't (at least the last
time I checked).

While updating the Mac icons I needed to update the one for QGIS Browser as
well. So, I put one together [0][1].
Please let me know if this can be used for 2.0 release. If so, I'll commit
it.

I test the new QGIS features for the user manual 2.0.0. Working with
the QGIS browser I found that the 'Filter Files' feature either doesn't
work or that I don't use it properly. Is it possible that the function
still is in development?
Can someone please explain?

+1 for working out some visual distinction between QGIS and QGIS Browser.
That said, the proposed canvas-below-icon might be confusing. If I was a
first time user, I'd bet on the canvas icon being the main application to
make maps, versus it being a browser-only supporting application.

at least in nightly 2.5 win x64 (latest) QGIS Browser crashes when;
- layer selected, looked metadata etc
- some directory selected
- the same original layer selected -> crash
