Import your points as a shape and use the Point Sampling Tool, is made for that.
Be careful with projections.

The points plot out fine over the DEM, they are clearly matched up correctly
but how to get the value of the height out of the raster im

You can install "Find by Attribute" plug-in, it was designed to avoid
opening Attribute Table.
