In fact the contour plugin has been made redundant by the inclusion of the
contour option from the Raster menu (gdal utils)!

Is it a bug (WinXP - QGIS 1.4 - OSGEO4W)?

you can do in Arc?

my xp machine via windows standalone it won't work with this error:

Yes. For now, you could add a composer picture and move it over the legend as
a workaround.

I had actually thought of using r.to.vect to get a point map with all
the pixel centres, then v.to.db to get their coordinates etc., but the
maps are too large and resolution too high. Obviously r.mapcalc was
