Hi Naomi,
I have a few recommendations:
* if possible use a newer QGIS version like QGIS 1.7.x - there is a lot
of activity in QGIS development and it usually helps to stay with the
current stable version. One day you may even want to try OSGeo4W and the
trunk version ;-)

I have developed a full college FOSS4G curriculum and gave a workshop on
this at FOSS4G in Denver and will be giving it at the AAG in New York at the
end of the month.
I'd love to give it at the upcoming NA FOSS4G as well but unfortunately

Hi Yves,
I hadn't come across geophp.com before, so thanks for the link.
It still seems beyond what is required though, unless i'm just being naive.
All I was wanting to do was have a very simple PHP script to create new

Hi,
You can use the Postgis commands "ST_AsText()" and "ST_GeomFromText()"
for this purpose. If you want to extract x/y you can use
ST_AsText(ST_X(the_geom)) AS x.
Hope this helps? It is really easy - not complicated at all.

Does anyone know of a simple PHP script which can be used to connect to a

I really need something that would decode the 'the_geom' field to X/Y
values, then re-encode on update.

Hi,
Thanks for forwarding this CfP.
I see that the focus is clearly on research and education. Many in our
community have a more practical approach, like using OS GIS for solving
tasks and supporting processes in local authorities. Are you interested

Please also note that not all layers are writable. There may be
permission problems (e.g. in a Postgis Layer) and there are some OGR
providers that are only read-only.

Hello Lachlan,
not all the supported vector formats can be edited in QGIS.
AFAIK actually shape files, PostGIS and SQLite layers can be edited.
Probably you should convert your data to one of the editable formats.

How do you change the default read only status of layers so I can edit

Hi Zoltan and others,
QGIS has a second method to assign styles: using data-defined columns.
This is where OGR feature styling could be used. You assign certain data
columns to styling (e.g. font styles, positioning, dashing,
stroke-width). Label styling in QGIS is a good example where

Hi!
On the MapInfo list, someone wanted to know why map styles in a MapInfo tab
file does not show in Qgis.
The answer was that the Qgis reader does not support it.
This is a pity since one of the tab file advantages is the ability to store
map styles.
I would like to know if this is a deliberate d
