Example: A client of mine would like to view GIS data which would include sanitary sewers, parcels, storm sewers, buildings and roads, so I install Qgis on their computerand then I setup a Qgis file for the client to use but when I setup the Qgis file I will be using my typical GIS data locations

Why do you need to change the datasource, instead of simply opening a new layer? Are there things like symbology that must be preserved? If it's for creating maps, you can use the Print Composer, and simply change layers. If you need the same symbology, in the dev version (qgis-1.9) you can setup
