i have almost the same problem with sextante and python (qgis 1.9 on
ubuntu).
I started qgis as usually and qgis gave me the python error above

Anyway, I tried to move the plugin from the core
(/usr/share/qgis/python/plugins), but running qgis it appears the python
error again.
I'd leave things the way they are and wait for next week.

That was obviously the wrong version (the one that actually is working).

I was using the latest build of qgis, which I build it myself.
Since you said it works for you I figured it should be something on my side.
I cleaned the instalation purged any left overs, and now it works (duh!).
