Thanks Andreas, I used a crude but effective workaround by selecting the polygon and then the points in the polygon and then doing a simple {case when "Variable" is NULL then 'String' else "Variable" end} for each polygon (I only had nine so it wasn't too much of a strain) and it worked fine. C
