At our lab, we've tried to compare a shapefile of island contours with an
geotiff of a nautical chart.

Excel spreadsheet. It does work well. You may need to uncheck "copy
geometry in WKT representation from attribute table" option in Settings
menu > Options.

You can export to CSV (comma separated text file) then reimport from there in
excel. There is also a plugin that export directly to Excel I
think. You can also open the .dbf file with libre office calc and work
from there.
