Just finished my lessons at this minute – in Hydrology ☺
We use DTM
Create:
· Hillshade with factor 2
· Use Fill Sinks (Wang& Lui) on DTM
· Create a bluespot in Rastercalculator FilledDEM – DTM. Style and set
transparency to 0
· Use Channelnetwork & Drainage B

Is it possible to use Atlas to print out a number of maps each showing a
different layer instead of a different area of interest?
I'm thinking the atlas layer would have the same area of interest polygon
duplicated with an attribute that holds the layer name(s) to be displayed.

I had that need aswell. If data defined properties were made possible in
the map composer lock preset option, that would be something direct to do.

I think the rule based symbology would work but I’m trying to print a series of
raster layers so unfortunately that’s not an option this time.

along with the project file. This should work. Place them relative to
the .qgs file (e.g. in the same folder as the .qgs or with an additional
folder hierarchy).

I made a few tests and, it works well for vector layer. All you need is the
right coverage layer, a top rule in all layers that you need to controlo.
Like you said, Yhis does not work for raster layer, neither it work for
vector renderers like ppint displacement or heatmap.

I just noticed that setting a given scale in QGIS does not result in seeing
the features on screen at that scale.
For instance, if I set the scale to 1:500.000, a feature measuring 100km
should have 20cm on the screen (or printed). But to get close to that, I
must set the scale to 260.000

There are a few parameters that can influence this behavior.
First of all you should check if the projection is suitable for the
region you are inspecting.
Then there is also the DPI setting which can influence how things are
scaled when sent to the screen.

It would. I also thought that the same could be done to layer groups.
Still, I would prefer to see data-defined properties for locking layer
(presets) in map items in the map composer. It would be much easier to pick
a few layers, create a few presets, and them "iterare" them in atlas.
