This software was created at a time when qgis.org was hosting 2.10 debs for

Is it possible to have more than one map window open at the one time? In
MapInfo it is useful having two map windows with different contents being
able to be displayed in the one map composer (layout) window. This is really
handy when producing graphics for reports etc. Can QGIS do this?

To be clear though you can have composer maps with different layers using
the Layer Presets feature.

The way I like to think of Preset is like Virtual Canvas: users can have
multiple combination of layers visibility and styles. Multi-style also
works with Presets (i.e. you can have Style 1 with Layer A in Preset 1 and
Style 2 with Layer A in Preset 2). So, in essence, you can replicate
