If I remember right there was some restriction on the project projection. It probably has to be EPSG:4326, but I am just going from memory. If you are just doing a fixed rectangle, ellipse, or some polygon such as an octagon, you could see if the "Shape Tools" plugin would do what you need.

Hi, I am on QGIS 2.16.2 - I have a GeoTiff which "loses" some colors when loaded in the program (basically on the extremes of the palette)...I have tried some basic adjustments on the properties of the layer, with no success. have others experimented a similar issued and identified a solution?
