Easy enough to set the project/data folders as read only, especially on
a network. The software will work with this.

Hi,
I would do a bug report https://trac.osgeo.org/gdal. Have you tried fixing the
geometry before exporting? The problem could be in the tab file. You could
try to save in another format to see if the error is also reproduced.

It's a bit of a workaround if you were planing to insert the numeric scale
in the middle of other text, but you can add a scalebar and change it's
style to numeric.
