Im not sure what format your vector layers are in, but if you are dealing with
a large layer, then you could look at uploading to something like PostGIS, you
could then apply a filter when adding the layer to only load data in your area
of interest.
You could also look at using a filter on

Another option is to add named styles to the layer and switch between them. And
if you want, associate them with map themes for quick switching.
