I am trying to put the same layer style to different data columns with
the new symbology (tested 1.8, 1.-268 on windows). I use the graduaded
renderer - The problem is after changing the colunn a new classification
is triggerd so the predefined colors and ranges are dropped.

I think the problem arises because many people already used QGIS 1.7.
Now user have the choice to use 1.6 (missing new features, maybe needed)
or 1.8 (more bugs) (at least at windows). Maybe it could be useful to
split Development Branch into two parts. QGIS would be providing three
Versions.

By the way: I needed to convert a Raster to Point, because I had
Artefacts (stripes of lower height-value) after reprojection with GDAL.

I am exporting vector features with v.out.ogr. I tried with QGIS via
Plugin and with GRASS. My Dataset is a point-feature with more than 1
million points with height attribute.
Exporting to shape is realy slow - 1 day ~ 30% exported

just in case you also use raster files:
on the fly projection currently only works with vector. so you have to
project other data to the projection your raster is using or you have to
reproject the raster (gdal -- warp)
