Sorry for this very late respons, but it's quite difficult to "get" the
Qgis userlist-system.
Anyway, I'm looking for a way to have some of my maps presented in a bird's
eye view (like Bing Aerial). It does not necessarily have include shading
of buildings etcetera.

You can try to build a 3d view with Qgis2threejs plugin. It's very nice!
- If you don't have a base DEM, you can select "Flat plane" option, to
start testing
- you are able to export labels to display in the 3D space
- test some interesting output options...

Could you post an example of what you are looking for?
Actually, I don't think QGIS can do such maps but maybe it is possible
using some user defined map projection.
