Shape Tools is fantastic, and plugs a much needed gap in QGIS core

Can I strongly encourage you to investigate porting some of these
features/fixes over to QGIS core?
The latest version of Shape Tools has several nice new features.
1) *Geodesic Measurement Layer *will take a line or polygon layer and for
each of the geometries calculate the geodesic distances of each feature.
The user can choose whether each line segment is measured and output as a
line measure
