I assumed it was either part of qgis or was a plugin itself. I found a
matplotlib package with google for OS 10.6 at
http://www.cgl.ucsf.edu/Outreach/pc204/matplotlib.html. It works now.

How did you install matplotlib? Binaries from sourceforge are probably 32bit
only. If you are running Qgis on Snow Leopard, it will be running 64bit,
unless you have one of the original core solo/duo Macs
