And another thing, after adding the ppa to sources.list file I'm now getting
the error messages below when I run apt-get update. Any way to fix this too?

Hi Giovanni,
Thank you for the link. Unfortunately, installing qgis from that ppa is
resulting in the error that goes below. This is shown by a popup menu from
the software centre, not at the command line. As I understand it, the
package grass642 is failing to install; is there any work around?

Hi Luis,
if you don't need qgis compiled against gdal 1.9 you can use the
nightly-build repository (see the qgis download page) to install qgis
1.8 (almost).
