Sometimes the semi-transparent rectangle drawn by the Select Tool does
not vanish:

even after refreshing or subsequent selections.
Had not seen this problem on linux or Mac.
Any solution other than exiting and starting up again?

I've found the problem when using the Select Tool while having a
raster layer selected instead of
having a vector layer (by mistake, of course). Hopefully the same
solution fixes both
