Thanks to all for your help. I finally decided to find another source
for my Oregon boundary and yahoo! Everything started lining up. So I
was able to make some real progress. I am DELETING that other
shapefile, and my guess, based on the help I received from all of you,
is that the projec

No, only the parameters matter.
Or is it because one is a projected CRS and one is a geographic CRS?
Should be no problem with OTF enabled.

Hi,
Qgis can handle both projected and geographic CRS at the same time. If it
is a Custom CRS, it could means the projection was not recognized by a software
along its production line and could indicate a problem if it contains errors...
Or someone tried to recreate a missing CRS.

Still struggling I am attaching the info from the prj file and the
extent info from the metadata for each shapefile:

I start by setting my project CRS.
And make sure OTF is on.
You have no choice of setting a project CRS if OTF is off.
But when I do this with files that have originated from two
different sources
Hi,
I agree with Ramon on every point specially the section on "if layers don't
line up". If you can send some files, we can help more.

Hi,
Make sure you have "projection on the fly" activated. Also, make sure the
next option (something like "what to do if a laker has no projection") is set
to "ask". This way, if your projection is not specified, it will ask you
instead of allocating a default or a project CRS.
